CMS Renames the EHR Incentive Programs and Advancing Care Information

On April 24, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a proposed rule for making changes to the electronic health records (EHR) Incentive program, commonly known as Meaningful Use, and the Advancing Care Information performance category of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). Although the changes do not merge or combine the EHR Incentive Programs and MIPS, they will move each program beyond existing requirements of Meaningful Use. The new requirements will focus on interoperability and improving patient access to health information. To better reflect the new focus, effective immediately, CMS is renaming the programs:

  • EHR Incentive Programs – Promoting Interoperability (PI) Programs
  • Advancing Care Information performance category – Promoting Interoperability performance category

Under the changes, the programs remain separate. Click here for the fact sheet on the proposed rule.
