Nursing Homes: Use the CMS Critical Element Pathway to Address Weight Loss
On November 28, 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented the new survey process for long-term care facilities which combines elements of the traditional survey and the QIS survey.
CMS has updated the Critical Element Pathways to align with the new regulations and survey process. The Critical Element Pathways focus on care and services provided. These are the tools that surveyors will follow when doing their investigations.
Surveyors will use the Nutrition Critical Element Pathway when investigating a “resident who is not maintaining acceptable parameter of nutritional status or is at risk for impaired nutrition to determine if facility practices are in place to identify, evaluate, and intervene to prevent, maintain, or improve the resident’s nutritional status”.
Nursing homes are fortunate that CMS has made the pathways available to the public. Using the pathways as part of your QAPI process is an excellent way to be proactive to ensure compliance with the new regulations and guidance. Click here to learn more.« Return to the Newsroom
